McQ Alexander McQueen executes contemporary styles with a renegade twist.

McQ never retreats from the wild and the unorthodox. We welcome the weird and the unwanted, celebrating their quirks and foibles, intrigued and inspired by their peculiarities.

Influenced by the attitude of the New York No Wave performer and writer, Lydia Lunch, the SS17 collection explores the surreal and the contrary. Lunch was confrontational in all she did, brandishing her sexuality like a weapon. This rebellious eroticism influenced and empowered an entire generation of young women. The controversial cult photographer Irina Ionesca captured an essence of that mood through her fetishistic imagery of women, channelling the 1920s through a 1970s lens, allowing women to own their sexuality, though with overtones of innocence.

It is this splicing of decades and the intimate interpretation of imagery that have become this season’s continuing themes. Never stepping too far from rock punk origins, there is a careful balance between fetish and fashion, as the signature kilt is reinterpreted in skirts, trousers and coats complete with leather bondage straps and lacing. Shoes made for stomping walk a similar path, substantial and studded married to Glam rock platform soles. Blurring the lines between male and female – a mark of McQ – striped separates in satin jacquard find their roots in men’s tailoring and cravats, freely androgynous. Contrastingly, a romantic softness hints at boudoir dressing, as lace slips and barely-there dresses suggest a purity, but always with a satisfying touch of the perverse.

McQ finds the beauty in the offbeat and the challenging, dedicated to turning the undesired into the craved.
